Recycling is becoming a fundamental part of everyday lives, with more of the things that we used to just chuck into the bin now being able to be recycled. Although not everyone thinks they should recycle, the message from local councils and various organisations is that if we do not start recycling then we will end up with a planet that will not be a healthy or prosperous place to live.

Much is said and done when it comes to recycling in the UK, with messages and requests about recycling an everyday occurrence in people’s lives, with councils enforcing strict recycling measurers and local waste centres acting really strictly when it comes to the rubbish we dump and do not recycle.

There are a few main reasons that recycling is so important and we take a look at these below, but no matter what reason the individual decides that it is time to start recycling, the more of us that do recycle everything we can then the greater the difference will make when it comes to achieving recycling targets set by every council in the country.

One of the biggest reasons that we all need to start recycling is because the UK is running out of space to dispose of the rubbish that every one of us produces. Extra landfill space is becoming hard to find, with more and more of the existing landfills reaching capacity and not many more areas to start new ones, which is why it is crucial that we begin to recycle more of our waste and not just chuck it into the “general” rubbish bin.

Recycling also means that we can start to preserve and reduce the need for so many raw materials, because a bit like landfill sites, raw materials are rapidly running out and it is unlikely that new sources can be found easily. Many of our products need raw materials to be produced, so if we start to run out of  these raw materials then the quality and quantity of the products we all need will start to reduce, unless we recycle more and start to re-use materials to make the everyday things that we all desperately desire.

By recycling the majority of the waste that we all produce we can also achieve a total goal of helping the environment, because the more we recycle, the less we rely on chopping down trees or important products from overseas, which along with many other plus points all come together to help protect our world.

With many experts suggesting that climate change is increasing on an alarmingly rapid basis and that global warming is becoming more of a problem than first thought it might, it really is vital that by recycling and making more use of existing items, we can all pull together and start protecting our world and therefore our future.

More and more people are learning that if we do not recycle everything we can, then this country and indeed the world could well be in major trouble in years to come. With landfills running out of space and raw natural materials running low, we simply have to do everything we can to stem the flow and make more use of what we have.

Recycling is something that every home in the UK is encouraged to do, but sometimes it’s not as easy for people in smaller living spaces, like flats and small homes, because most collections only happen on a fortnightly basis which means for these people, they struggle to find the space to store all of their recycling.

The most common things that most households recycle include:

Paper

Cans

Plastic Bottles

Glass Bottles

Cardboard

As you can see, if you are trying to do all the recycling you can, you might well end up running out of room to store all of the recycling before your weekly or most commonly your fortnightly recycling kerbside collection from your local council.

It is a problem for anyone living in a flat or a small house when it comes to being able to store your recycling, so it is important not to just give up and not bother, but to actually find alternative ways of managing your recycling strategy.

Below, we take a look at some of the options that you can utilise if you are struggling to find room to recycle!

Make Use Of Community Recycling Bins – If you live in a flat or a small community, it is quite common to share recycling bins so that you do all not have to have one clogging up space the surrounding vicinity. By sharing recycling space and boxes means that you can all share responsibility for putting the “bins” out on collection day and you can also encourage others to recycle as well.

Find Your Nearest Recycling Point – You would be surprised exactly where recycling points are located, from the back of large supermarkets all the way though to small car parks in village halls, you just need to find a local one! There are plenty of websites that you can visit to find your local or nearest recycling point or you can ring your local councils to find out exactly the best place to recycle your waste.

Council Collections – It is well worth a quick phone call to your local council to try and find what kerbside collections are available, as when moving to a new area or not quite knowing any new procedures that have been implemented might mean that you miss out on a recycling collection that you simply did not know about.

Compact Your Recycling – Things like cans, plastic bottles, cardboard boxes and toilets rolls can compact down quite nicely, which means that you can end up saving space by reducing the size of all of your individual recycling items. For example, if you have five empty cardboard boxes and three toilet rolls, you will be surprised just how small all of these things will compact down to, if you unfold them and then squash them down. Cans are just the same, as they will shrink right the way down with the just the aid of a heavy foot and reliable shoe!

Recycle Often – Instead of just finding room to hold all of your recycling for weeks on end, why not take your recycling to local recycling areas on your way shopping or when you go for a walk. If you get into the habit of recycling your waste regularly but in smaller quantities, you will find that you have less recycling hanging around the home and you will have more space and far less clutter, as most of us walk past recycling bins at some point most days.

If you have a small house or lack storage in your home then it can often seem quite a hassle to keep your recycling efforts going and keep trying to make sure you recycle the majority of your waste. Just by doing a few quick things, you can really make recycling easier for yourself which can make everything seem a lot more efficient in the long run.

Below, we take a look at our top tips when it comes to recycling your waste and recyclable materials.

Do It Often – One of the biggest moans and groans about recycling is that you need a massive area to store the recycling, which can cause issues for the smaller households. Most of us will pass a recycling area at some point during our day, so if you can take care of the recycling on a regular basis then you can get rid of the storage problem straight away.

Use Allocated Bins – The majority of councils in the UK now supply allocated bins for recycling, with some offering more recycling services than others. Try to make use of these bins frequently and then also contact your local council to encourage them to offer more services in your area.

Education – If you can encourage your children and even other family members to recycle, you can get the whole family in unison and they can all help you take care of the recycling. Getting others to sort your recycling and put it into relevant piles is one  time saving measure and then getting children to help you recycle will not only save you time but also help to educate the future generations.

Cut Down On Packaging – Before you even get the goods into your home, have you considered buying products that have less packaging in the first place, which means you have less to recycle and are also sending a clear message to producers. By either recycling your packaging on the way out of the supermarket or just buying goods that use less packaging, you can really begin to make a difference and save yourself time.

Outside Storage – There are some fantastic little recycling boxes and stack boxes that you can buy specifically just for storing your recycling and you can buy these from many of the leading high street stores and also specialist recycling shops and websites. By having outside storage for your recycling means that your home doesn’t become a collection point for weeks worth of cardboard boxes and empty jars, you can simply store them outside and the recycle them accordingly.

By doing little things often you really can take the stress and aggravation out of recycling which will also then make it more enjoyable and rewarding for you and your family.

Recycling has become a very popular subject over the past number of years and more and more of us are doing our bit to help. Many people are now starting to recycle efficiently in their own homes but what about when they are at work?

Many offices up and down the country have hundreds of employees working in them 5-6 days a week. This can create a substantial amount of waste products including:

Empty Ink Cartridges

Waste Paper

Food Packaging.

Plastics – Unwanted pens and calculators.

The waste produced can cause a big problem as most of it will go to landfill sites which will take a long time to break down. Whilst at landfill these waste products will also create high levels of CO2 which is dangerous to the environment. There are however many things we can do to make sure that we limit the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

Get recycling bins for your office

It is important to get the right bins in place throughout your office. Having these in place will ensure that your employees correctly dispose of waste without fuss.

One of the main reasons for poor recycling is not having the correct tools close to hand so by placing plastic, paper and ink cartridge  bins in offices instead of waste baskets you will stand a better chance of workers using them.

Re-use waste items

Items such as waste paper can be re-used instead of just being thrown away. If you have paper that has been incorrectly printed you can simply use the blank side to write notes. This is such a simple way to avoid unwanted waste and every office needs scrap paper to write a quick note on.

Refill your ink cartridges

Refilling your used ink cartridges can not only save the planet but also your money. Instead of simply throwing away your old ink cartridges away once empty why not take them to a specialist re-filler who will be able to supply you with just the ink at a lower cost than buying the whole unit again. Alternatively you could recycle your old cartridges and make sure that you purchase only recycled ink cartridges in the future.

Recycling efficiently within your office is a simple thing to do once you have things in place. Be sure to replace all of your existing waste bins with recycling ones, these can be purchased at a very small cost and can be set up to provide multiple recycling solutions.

Gloucestershire based Stationery Company Acorn Office could help you to become a greener business in 2011 with their high quality range of recycling bins aimed at the workplace.

Businesses throughout the UK could benefit from having the bins placed in their offices and do their bit for the environment. Currently too much office waste goes to landfill sites which generates high levels of CO2, damaging the planet. Having the correct recycling bins in place is proven to dramatically increase the amount being recycled.

The recycling bins come in a range of sizes and options to fit any space. The desktop bins are ideal for those lacking in space and ensure that waste paper is correctly recycled. Food packaging bins, ideal for drink cans & sandwich cartons, work well when placed in areas where food is consumed and also help to keep areas tidy.

The one main factor with the bins that Acorn Office Products provide is that they are made from recycled fibres themselves with content of up to 70%. Not only are you now going to be able to recycle your waste very quickly and efficiently but at the same time you are using an already recycled product.

All of the recycling bins offered by Acorn Office can be personalised to your business, with your colour schemes and logo included. This can be very effective within an office environment where meetings are held or retail outlets where the bins will be used within the eye of the public. This isn’t just great for branding but it also shows your customers that you are environmentally conscious

Contact Acorn Office Products today to see what types of bins are available to your office and how they can customise them to suit your needs, also remember to spread the word to your customers and colleagues that you are actively recycling your office waste as this can only have a positive effect on the way they recycle. You can visit the website www.paperrecyclingbins.co.uk or call (01594) 810 610 where the team at Acorn Office will be only too pleased to help.

Many of us currently recycle within our own homes due to council run incentives and our own social conscience, but how many of you actively recycle your waste at work?

The problem with recycling in your office is that there are usually not the facilities available to simply place your waste into the right receptacle. This means that to save time more and more office workers just place their waste in everyday waste bins that simply go to landfill sites, take years to degrade and during that time create high levels of CO2 which is very harmful to the environment and the ozone layer.

So how do you effectively recycle in your office? Here are our 3 top tips to office recycling heaven.

1) Get the right equipment

You must have the right equipment in your office in order to recycle efficiently. Do not be alarmed, we are not suggesting a large financial outlay at all. You can invest in some inexpensive recycling bins that not only help speed up the process but also look great in your office space.

Modern recycling bins come in various sizes to fit any space, you can choose from dump bins, desktop tidies and multiple item bins. The best bins to buy are the ones made from recycled fibre as these can even be branded simply with your company brand or logo.

Having the right equipment will ensure that employees will recycle effectively.

2) Re-use waste products

There are many things within an office that are thrown out as waste but can be re-used again. A couple of examples of this would be old ink cartridges and paper.

Ink cartridges can be re-filled ready to be used again and again, this not only saves the environment but it will also save you money. Alternatively you could make sure that you buy recycled ink cartridges for your printer.

Paper that has been incorrectly printed on is normally just thrown into the waste paper bin. These types of paper are ideal for making notes whilst on the telephone, or why not use the other side to print off draft documents. Once that piece of paper has been thoroughly used, be sure to recycle it correctly in one of your new bins.

3) Send emails not paper memos

Many businesses still print out memos and to send around the office, in the modern age we live in there really is no need to do this. You can simply email your memo to team members to keep them informed and with so many office workers now having desktops, laptops and smart phones there is also no need for them to print these memos off.
